Weekly Update for December 14th, 2015

DNews for the week of December 14th, 2015

Greetings to all. I am aware that I am in the large minority however, I am beginning to become restless with the warm weather. Crazy, I know! Growing up in New Hampshire I grew accustomed to and enjoyed the winters (pictures always had snow banks up to the roof of the house and memories of  my mother sighing that she had to help me put on my snowsuit for the 13th time that day to go BACK outside and jump off those snow banks). Bring me the cold and let's go skating, sledding and skiing - please!

A few items as we move into another week in December

- The Massachusetts Department of Secondary and Elementary Education this past week updated standard testing procedures for all public schools. Two areas to take note:

There will be no MCAS long comp for grades 4 and 7 this year.

The window for scheduling testing in March was moved to a week later.

Our grade four teachers will communicate to you how this affects their goals and expectations for their students in writing this spring. I believe this allows for more authentic writing pieces and freedom for our educators and students without the long composition "hovering" in late March.

We will also be working within the next week to release to you the specific dates for the late March - April MCAS testing period for grades 3-5 (English Language Arts) and the May testing period (Math and Grade 5 Science).

- As we do each Friday morning all of our students come together for our All-School meeting. This past Friday took on a different look. Together with a team of teachers and 5th grade Lynch Leaders, each child in attendance made a holiday card. The recent story of a young girl in upstate New York who lost her family in an arson fire struck a cord with many of our faculty members. I briefly led our meeting to explain that there is a girl who is missing some of her family members this holiday season and that we as a community wanted to come together and brighten her day. Our 450+ cards will be sent out in the mail this weekend.
